Who we are

The taz Panter Foundation is committed to independent journalism worldwide. It supports emerging journalists and an engaged civil society, facilitates international exchange, and empowers journalists in their work — especially where press freedom is under pressure. At its core is a simple belief: diverse perspectives are essential to a strong democracy.

Founded in 2008 by taz readers, the taz Panter Foundation is now one of the few non-profit organizations in Germany actively supporting critical journalism. Our work is driven by a small, dedicated team in Berlin, backed by a global network of journalists, supporters, and alumni. At the core of what we do are independence, solidarity, and a commitment to strengthening journalistic diversity.

What drives us

We are a small team with a large network. With an annual budget of around €1 million—80 percent of it from private donations—we support emerging journalists, assist media professionals at risk, and bring together journalists from around the world. Since 2011, more than 75 workshops have connected people from over five continents.

What sustains us

The strength of the taz Panter Foundation lies in its community. Thousands of supporters make our work possible—regularly, reliably, and out of conviction. In the end, it’s always about hands-on work: support, networks, and impact.
